With the 17th overall pick, the Toronto Maple Leafs pick Timothy Liljegren, a Swedish defenseman who currently plays in the SHL (Swedish Hockey League).
According to eliteprospects.com, Liljegren is “A skilled offensive defenseman with excellent skating skills. The way he combines his speed with strong puck-handling skills makes him a quite spectacular player to watch. Decision making is at times a bit questionable and there is some room for improvement when it comes to his defensive game. If he puts everything together, he should become a high scoring defenseman thanks to his hockey sense, quick release and strong passing game. (EP 2017)”
Don’t be quick to judge him negatively though, he is only 18 years old which means there is plenty of room to grow. He shoots right-handed, which is perfect for Mike Babcock (we know how he is with the righty-lefty pairings) and he has a wicked release. He’s a proficient skater and to be honest, his description reminds me a lot of Morgan Rielly.
Liljegren plans on playing in the SHL for one more season before coming over to Toronto which means he has more time to prepare for a life in the NHL.
