With the NHL Awards looming, here is my pick for the Calder Memorial Trophy. The finalists are Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, and Zach Werenski.
Obviously, you cannot compare these three players straight up because they each play a different position. So, here are charts that I made comparing this year’s finalists to previous winners of the same position.
*Above 50% means that the team carried the puck more often than not when this player is on the ice
As you can tell, Auston Matthews is the one who dominates in the important categories for his position. He is the first rookie to score 40+ goals since Alexander Ovechkin and he has the highest faceoff win percentage compared to any other rookie since the cap era. Zach Werenski and Patrik Laine have been amazing as well, but the Calder goes to the best rookie, in this case, it is Matthews.
