What a freaking game. I hoped that the Penguins would sort of roll over for us, but that was a long shot. For the entire 60 minutes I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sit, and now my legs are sore from jumping up and down. When the puck went off Gardiner’s skate and in, these cursed thoughts started creeping into my mind. It seemed like everytime something good happened to the Leafs, they were destined to make a fatal mistake. BUT THIS IS A NEW ERA. A NEW CENTURY. A NEW TEAM. They refuse to let the ghosts of the past haunt them and they continue to trudge along. Kasperi Kapanen with his first of the season, Connor Brown with his 20th, AUSTON FREAKING MATTHEWS WITH HIS 40th for the first time since MATS SUNDIN. This is a new team, with bright young stars and they are going to be good for years to come.

The last time the Maple Leafs made it to the playoffs after a full season was 2003-2004.

That was 13 years ago.

A lot of things have happened since then so it might be hard to process the sheer magnitude of that number. Maybe this list will help you out. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we?

1. In the 2004 NHL draft, some of the players included Alexander Ovechkin (currently 31 years old), Evegni Malkin (currently 30 years old), Devan Dubnyk (currently 30 years old), and Blake Wheeler (currently 30 years old).

2. Ronald Reagan dies of pneumonia

3. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King wins best picture at the Oscars.

4. Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris: Yeah! is the song of the year

5. Facebook is launched

6. The TV show Friends ends

7. G.W. Bush is reelected

8. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were both 6 years old

9. Mike Babcock was the coach of the Anaheim MIGHTY DUCKS.

10. Brendan Shanahan was playing for the Detroit Red Wings and scored 30 goals and got 68 points.

The Leafs are in the playoffs and I cannot believe it.  To see them in the playoffs, all the relieved faces on the players faces, I cannot describe what this means to me.

I’m going to go cry of joy now.
